A 41-28 victory over Hinds CC has helped the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College football team vault into a No. 1 national ranking for the first time in two years.
The latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll utilized the Football Computer Rankings formula for the first time.
The FCR formula gives 50 percent weight to a team's winning percentage, 25 percent to an opponent's winning percentage and 25 percent to opponents' opponent's winning percentage and counts for one-third of the NJCAA poll.
Nine human votes comprise the other two-thirds of the poll.
"Where we're ranked at the end of the season will mean a lot more to me than where we're ranked this week," said MGCCC athletic director Ladd Taylor. "We're happy to get the recognition, but there's going to be a bigger target on our back as long as we have that ranking.
"We've got a tough schedule to finish up beginning with this week's game at Jones and that's where I want the players' minds focused; this Saturday at Jones."
