PERKINSTON---With more than 25 years of coaching under his belt, Jason Conner has seen more than his share of wins and losses on the hardwood. Now he brings that experience to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College as women's head basketball coach. The college's Board of Trustees approved Conner earlier this week.
"This is a tremendous opportunity," said Conner, a Lakeland, FL native. "I hope to create a winning culture for this program and make a positive impact on the lives of our players."
Conner spent six years as men's basketball coach at Delta State University and compiled a 95-73 record, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and five trips to the Gulf South Conference Tournament. While at Delta State, Conner's players had a 100 percent graduation rate and his teams were Nationally ranked in three of his six years as head coach. Before that, Conner served as Belhaven's head basketball coach from 1993-97 and an as an assistant coach for men's and women's teams at Delta State, South Alabama, Houston, and Texas–El Paso.
"I'm excited about being part of the program," Conner said. "Our goal is to win and also develop winning attitudes and mindsets."
Conner says his biggest challenge right now is recruiting.
"We've got a lot of ground to make up in recruiting," he added. "We'll have our ups and downs with getting players, but the main thing we want are leaders. You have to have leaders on and off the floor."
As far as basketball philosophy is concerned, Conner says his team will play a match up zone defense and focus on fundamentals.
