The Stone High tennis team will play Oxford at 2 p.m. today for the MHSAA 5A state championship.
It marks the third straight year Coach Freddie Wegner has guided his team to the state championship match and the third straight time the Tomcats have faced Oxford.
Stone made it to the finals with a 4-3 victory over Gautier in the South State title match last week.
The final score of that match is misleading as the Tomcats won the first four matches - enough to win the overall match - before forfeiting the final three.
Christa Owen's opponent at girls' singles forfeited and Beth Owen and Lexi Johnson beat their opponents 6-1, 6-1.
Noah Rowell won 6-0, 6-1 at boys' singles and Henry Stonnington and Caleb Amacker took a close 7-5, 6-4 victory at boys' doubles after trailing 4-1 in the second set.
The state individual tournament will begin with first-round play on Thursday and the finals on Friday.
The Tomcats advanced to the second round of the 5A playoffs with 10-0 and 14-4 victories over McComb Friday and Saturday.
Stats were not available for either game.
Stone travels to Pearl River Central Friday and hosts the Blue Devils Saturday in game two.
A third game, if necessary, will follow game two.
The Lady 'Cats were eliminated from postseason play with a 4-1 loss to East Central Friday and a 15-3 loss to the Hornets Saturday.
Stone finished the season with a 5-18 record.
The Tomcats play today and tomorrow in the state championship golf tournament in Oxford.
