Residents who want to enjoy outdoor sports and and support a good cause will have an opportunity this weekend.

Several friends and family members are hosting a softball tournament to help cover Stone County resident Stephanie Mayfield’s medical expenses.

The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. this Saturday, Jan. 23 at Hood Fields, at 460 Old Highway 49 in Wiggins.

“There is no admission for spectators, but we will have a full concession stand,” Co-organizer Viola Hunt said.

Hunt has organized the event with the help of Sammy Gibson.

Hunt said every dime made from team sign-up and all concession stand profits will go toward Mayfield’s medical expenses.

“Any donations will all go straight to Stephanie,” Hunt said.

Mayfield was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. She is a regional Project Director for Mississippi Tobacco FREE Coalition for Stone County.

There are 16 teams scheduled to play, which includes eight male teams and eight teams that are co-ed.

Hunt said the game times for each match up will be completed later this week.
