Today, Friday, January 27, 2023 the US Forest Service, De Soto Ranger District, is planning a prescribed burn in Perry County, along Forest Service (FS) 353.Â
This planned prescribed burn will be 895 acres of Burn Block 7209. The burn is adjacent to FS 353 and west of the intersection of FS 309. The unit is 4 miles west of MS Hwy 57 and 10 miles north of MS Hwy 26. Smoke will be visible from Hwy 57 and 26 and Bendale Road.Â
The purpose of this burn is for longleaf pine restoration, wildlife habitat improvement (gopher tortoise, deer, turkey), and hazardous fuel reduction. This area is characterized by mostly a mixed age longleaf ecosystem. There are no gopher tortoise burrows on the unit, but there are on the unit to the north and east. While the burn is primarily for hazardous fuel reduction there is a secondary benefit to wildlife habitat.Â
Crews, equipment, and engines will be working in this location today. Please use caution in the area. Especially along FS 353, as crews will be working to contain and mop up the burn edge.
