It was an unusual call to begin with.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. last Wednesday, Sgt. Trey Reynolds and Cpl. Josh Beasley of the Wiggins Police Department went to the Murphy USA gas station on East Frontage Drive in response to report of a man passed out in his vehicle.
What they encountered was 29-year-old Leroy J. Hartfield asleep in front of the ATM on the property with two pit bulls in the vehicle.
“The officers detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” said WPD Chief Matt Barnett.
That provided probable cause to search the vehicle and that search turned up nearly two ounces of marijuana.
Hartfield was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, transfer manufacture or distribute.
He was lodged at the Stone County Regional Correctional Facility and has since posted a $20,000 bond.
It was good police work by our officers,” Barnett said.
