Driver arrested during trick-or-treat

Laura Chewning is taken into custody by Wiggins Police Department patrolman Chris Sherrill during the annual Merchants’ Trick-or-Treat event in downtown Wiggins Thursday.

A Wiggins Police Department officer arrested a driver after she failed to stop at a downtown stop sign during the annual Merchants’ Trick-or-Treat.

Laura Chewning, a 57-year-old whose residence was given as Bakersfield, Ca., allegedly ran the stop sign at College Avenue while traveling south on First Street.

She was immediately pulled over and dumped a crystalline substance on the ground, the arresting officer said.

That brought a felony charge of obstruction/tampering with physical evidence. She was also charged with driving under the influence-second, a misdemeanor.

WPD Chief Matt Barnett said the incident was made worse by the fact there were so many children downtown at the time.

“You have to be extra careful driving when there are pedestrians present,” he said. “Especially when those pedestrians are children.”

Chewning posted cash bonds totaling $5,500.
