Grant funds for downtown Businesses will be available this fall

The Stone County Economic Development Partnership (SCEDP) and Mississippi Power have teamed up to provide a Façade Grant Program to support the Central Business District of Wiggins.  “In an effort to improve some of the existing store front upgrades, we are kicking off the program this week,” said SCEDP Board President, Jody Miles.  Mississippi Power is providing a Community Investment Program grant of $25,000 and EDP has matched that total.

When asked, Mayor Darrell Berry said, “For businesses in our small Downtown, this project can make a significant impact in how we look.”

Betsy M. Rowell, Director of EDP said, “First impressions are important.  A coat of paint, new windows or doors,  awnings and creative signage can make a world of difference in the look of Downtown Wiggins.  Many rural communities are faced with declining downtowns, ours is seeing a bit of resurgence with approximately ten new businesses in the last year in the Central Business District.”

EDP will host a meeting with potential applicants in late September to review the process.  We hope to begin awarding grants by early November.

Mississippi Power Wiggins Manager Garrett Parker said, “These Community Investment Program grants are a great partnership between Mississippi Power, the Stone County Economic Development Partnership and the entrepreneurs in Wiggins’ Central Business District. We’re working together to beautify the area, improve access for all citizens and attract more visitors to the area.”

An application process and guidelines have been developed for anyone interested in applying.  Additional information is available from the EDP office, 601-928-5418 or email:  BRowell@StoneCounty.com
