What allegedly began as a verbal altercation between two men last Wednesday escalated into charges of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The Wiggins Police Department responded to a call on Auburn Street and, when they arrived, found 41-year-old Randy Howze with injuries nearly beyond description.

Howze’s eyes were swollen shut, his face was misshapen and he was bleeding profusely.

Police allege 51-year-old Joe M. Johnson, of Wiggins, escalated the situation by taking a broken piece of lumber with the protruding remnant of a nail and beating Howze with it.

“It was a verbal altercation which escalated into physical violence,” said WPD Chief Matt Barnett.

Howze was transported to Memorial Hospital at Stone County before being transferred to another facility.

No update on his condition was available.
