Scarecrows arriving

Last year’s winning scarecrow display created by Animal Care Clinic of Wiggins.

Scarecrows are once again making their way to Wiggins for the annual Scarecrow Convention.

Those paying attention will notice the attendees hanging out on street corners, in vacant lots and in side yards of homes and businesses throughout the community.

Flopsy Flannigan, a spokesscarecrow for this year’s convention, said she and other scarecrows look forward all year to the convention.

“You simply cannot beat the hospitality shown by the people of Wiggins and all of Stone County, really,” she said. “We spend the whole year planning what we’ll wear and what section of the city we’ll stay in once we arrive.”

There will be the traditional contest for the best scarecrow in People’s Choice, Judges’, and Super Hero categories.

The People’s Choice voting, which can be done at, begins Oct. 2 and will wrap up Oct. 16.

First-place winners in all categories will receive $25 in cash, a plaque and will see their entry featured in an upcoming edition of the Stone County Enterprise.

The convention is sponsored by the Stone County Chamber of Commerce, the City of Wiggins, Pine Hill Ladies, the Stone County Enterprise and individual donations.

Flannigan, who was interviewed from her home in Orange, Texas, said she was eager to interact with the local folks.

“Should you see us, stop by and say hello,” she said. “If we’re not really responsive; well, you know, we have a lot on our minds with all the convention activity.”
