The Stone High varsity basketball teams travelled to Petal Saturday for the Petal Invitational Shootout and came away with a pair of victories.
The Lady ’Cats avenged a 39-32 loss to Moss Point in the PRCC Shootout with a 35-33 victory over the Lady Tigers.
“That was a good win,” said coach Sam Smith. “Moss Point is a good team and they were ranked No. 1 on the coast in the latest poll and we knocked them off, so that’s a big one.”
Hayleigh Breland led Stone with 12 points while Reina Hartfield added 11.
Hartfield also had five rebounds, dished out two assists and made two steals as the Lady ’Cats improved to 12-4 overall.
The Tomcats started slow, but caught fire in the second half to take a 64-30 victory over Moss Point.
“It was an 11-point game at the half,” said coach Todd Miller. “Then, J’saiah [Brown] came out in the second half and hit three 3-pointers right in a row and then he hit two more to start the fourth quarter.”
Brown would finish the night with 20 points while Cortez Dennis added 12 and Cadynce Johnson contributed 10.
Caleb Armstrong dished out eight assists while Javun Johnson made seven steals as the Tomcats improved to 10-7 overall.
Both the Lady ’Cats and Tomcats were scheduled to travel to Poplarville on Tuesday and Forrest County AHS on Friday as Region 7-4A play resumes.
