Melanie Roe, the Wiggins Police Department’s Animal Control Officer, has been hospitalized with injuries from a motorcycle crash in St. Martin Saturday morning.
Tragically, Roe’s husband, Harrison County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Glenn Roe, was killed in the accident.
The pair were each riding motorcycles which collided with a pickup truck on Old Fort Bayou Road.
WPD Chief Matt Barnett said Roe was much more than just an Animal Control Officer.
“That’s what the general public sees of her,” he said. “But she does so much more than that for our department.
“She keeps us up on our requirements on the NCIC national crime database and she runs our evidence locker, cataloguing all of the evidence we take into custody and arranging the transport of that evidence to the crime lab and to courts for hearings.”
Barnett said he thought Roe would be released from the hospital Monday and his department would offer her all the support they could.
“We’ll be there for her,” he said.
He also said it would take all of his staff to make up for Roe’s absence during her recovery.
“The skill set and training she has, I can’t just put another officer in that position and expect them to know everything needing to be done,” he said.
