Gerald Mettro Bond "Jerry"

Gerald Mettro Bond (Jerry) age 79 passed away on Monday, June 15, 2020 at his home in Oxford after a battle with Leukemia. He was a member of Oxford University United Methodist Church, where he volunteered to drive the bus for seniors. Jerry was born in Gulfport, MS on December 4, 1940. He graduated from Wiggins Highschool, attended Perkinston Junior College and served in the Army National Guard.

Jerry was an avid aviator for 67 years. As a young boy he loved flying and acquired a private pilot license as a teenager. After encouragement from his wife, Jerry became a commercial airline pilot flying for Southern Airways and Republic Airlines before retiring from Northwest Airlines. Being a commercial pilot was his livelihood but it was also his greatest joy. In addition to flying, he loved touring with his wife Carolyn (Charlie) in their motorhome. Many trips were taken across the US and Canada over the years. Jerry’s love for new adventures led him to ranching, not only in Mississippi, but in Paraguary and South America, as well. He was known for his great sense of humor and the gift of gab; he never met a stranger and always had a story to tell. His greatest passion of all was helping others and his friends knew they could always count on him. When Jerry wasn’t helping others, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s school programs and sporting events.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Mettro and Demetria Bond and his son,Christopher Ray Bond.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn (Charlie) Flowers Bond; daughter, Rebecca Bond Garner (Todd); granddaughter, Ann Gates Garner; grandson Christopher Mettro-Dixon Garner (Mett); his sister Carolyn Bond (Larry) of Wiggins, MS; one niece, Tana Bond Walsh (Tim) of New Jersey; and a newphew Tim Bond of Los Angeles, CA; and two grand-nephews.

A private graveside service was held Saturday, June 20th in Amory, MS, but a memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital of Memphis, Shriners Hospital for Children, or Oxford University United Methodist Church, 424 South 10th St., Oxford, MS. 38655.
