Mary Smith

Mary Agness Smith, 83 of McHenry, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday afternoon in Saucier. She was born April 29, 1937 in McHenry, the eldest of 8 children to Modie, Sr. and Doris (Hickman) Parker. Growing up, Mary Angess loved going to church and gospel sings with her Aunt Eva Atchinson. Aside from that, she helped her mother in keeping her siblings in line, which was at times a task in itself. She was an active and athletic young lady, learning piano while cheerleading and playing basketball in school. After graduating, she went on to school in Jackson, obtaining her Associates Degree in business. Mary Agness returned home to McHenry and went to work at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi. On a trip to the Frosty Mug in Wiggins one day, she met a young sailor in the US Navy named Gaston Smith. She always said she was "in the right place at the right time", as they were later married and spent the rest of their lives together. They made their home and raised their family on Ball Park Road in McHenry. Mary Agness is remembered by her children as a "simply wonderful mother". She was their biggest fan, rarely if ever missing a game or activity they were involved in. A devoted wife and great homemaker, she was always cleaning and keeping things in order. The family loved to go camping on Red Creek and take day trips to Pontchartrain Beach just for fun. A faithful Christian, Mary Agness played the piano while her husband Gaston led the singing at Perryville for many years. She was a jovial, happy lady that loved to laugh, loved the Lord and loved to sing. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mary Agness was preceded by her parents, Modie, Sr. & Doris Parker; her sisters: Dolly Edwards and Sue Necaise; brothers: Modie, Jr., M.P., III, Bud and Mike Parker; and her son, Stan Smith. Left to cherish her many memories are: her daughters: Donna (Richard) Ware of Gulfport, Tamara (Butch) Patton of Saucier and Stephanie (Terry) Richard of Knoxville, TN; with her only remaining brother, Bobby (Brenda) Parker of McHenry. She leaves a legacy of eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and more extended family and friends than one could ever count. The family has set funeral services for Thursday, July 30, 2020 at Perryville Missionary Baptist Church in McHenry. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 12:00 PM. Afterward, Mary Agness will be laid to rest in McHenry Oaklawn Cemetery. With the covid-19 situation, those attending services are encouraged to take all proper precautions to stay safe. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Smith family in their time of need. Please keep the entire family in your thoughts and prayer over this trying time.
